Mindfulness & Drumming in Nature with The Healing Herd

Come and have a session of experiential mindfulness with the Healing Herd. This photo was taken when I attended a drumming workshop with horses on the Somerset Levels in 2016. We will experience mindful breath, walking and drumming whilst supported in the midst of nature and all it’s nurture and healing sources. This experience will enhance your wellbeing and will introduce you to skills to take away with you.

Couples Wellbeing – Need some help?

Couples – Feeling the strain? Disconnected? Want to feel more intune and embracing the love for each other? Are you feeling stuck with differences between you that just not working themselves out? Come and work with the ponies/horses/donkey and have some experiential time, exploring where you are at and how you would like things to be in the future. We work outdoors, surrounded by our glorious Somerset countryside, held by all  that is wonderful in nature, learning about communication, connections, relaxation, mindfulness and our Selves.

Embracing ‘Connection’




There is something special about being around horses that is well written about in many ways and forms. They are all different, but similar in that they are sensitive souls and there is a depth of wisdom and learning to be taken from their teachings. This will be unique to each person and the truest interpretation will come from the person who is spending the time, experiencing a connection, with that particular horse,  in that authentic moment.

When we spend quality chosen time with horses, supported by all that nature provides, we can experience a more harmonious connection with ourselves and all that surrounds us. Quiet, mindful, resting and just ‘Being’ is like a tonic to our souls. Meditation and visualisations can guide us to a place of contemplation and rest, this may be where the magic of healing vibrational shift is stirring and rippling, waiting to be embraced with open arms and heart.

Spending time just ‘Being’ in the moment gives us a chance to relax in our mind and body, connecting with all our senses, which can improve our general wellbeing and give us new ways to manage life’s challenges. A relaxed body encourages a relaxed mind.

The time we spend outdoors being in the moment of ‘here and now’, noticing the weather, the sounds, the smells, the felt sensations, are all authentic moments of realness that we can recognise and replicate, bringing new habits into our lives, nurturing our mind/body/spirit.

Our body talks to us, let us turn up the volume and take notice of it’s important messages. The gut feelings, the intuitive felt messages, the synchronicities that jumble around us catching our vision. Symbols that attract our interests and songs playing in our head, fleeting words and colours and pictures that float hazly amongst our conscious thinking.

Let us spend time learning from these great wise teachers and all that the universe offers.

Equine Assisted Therapy & Wellbeing

Join us for an authentic experience, an empowering journey of connecting with your emotions through the time spent with horses and nature.

Equine Assisted Therapy (EFP) “uses equine-facilitated activities to explore the way a client sees and relates to themselves and others, their patterns of behaviour and survival as well as their gifts and strengths, and may include the exploration of past experiences and traumas. EFP is a form of psychotherapy and relies upon the therapeutic knowledge and experience gained through a mental health qualification”.  (www.leapequine.com)

One on one sessions of 1 hr = £55 or 1.5hr = £75

Equine Assisted Wellbeing, (personal learning), “uses equine-facilitated activities as a tool for self development and education, with a focus on the present moment. Skills include non-verbal communication, assertiveness, creative thinking, problem-solving, leadership, teamwork, relationship skills, confidence and resilience”. (www.leapequine.com)

Equine Assisted Wellbeing workshop days are small groups of 3 people, ‘sharing’ the experience, which has its own special authentic experience. 11am/4pm lunch of soup/rolls and light refreshments provided £45 per person.

Feeling cold, dismal or lethargic? Find some ‘Warmth’ in your life.

This time of year brings many people to seek support when they are fed-up with feeling low or flat.

Seek some warmth in your life. This may be an offering towards yourself, as self-compassion or treats. Plan a day out with a good friend, maybe visit somewhere you have really wanted to go for a long time. Special treats can really help lift the spirits.

Book a holiday so that you have something to look forwards to.

Seek the warmth from the heart of animals, and stroking their fur is always comforting!

Maybe check you are physically warm enough? Soft layers of wool can bring extra comfort in a snuggly way. Coats that keep out the winter wind, that the home is warm and comfortable and hot food to warm us from the inside.

Look at old photos of great memories or start a new activity and listen to some peaceful meditations with gratitude and love in the theme.

We would love to welcome you to The Healing Herd days of Wellbeing this Spring and Summer. One to one sessions are also available, as equine assisted therapy or equine assisted personal development.

‘Wellbeing Workshop Day’

Come and have an authentic day with us, enjoying the privilege of ‘Nurture in Nature’ that we can offer here in the Somerset countryside. Tranquil and beautiful, surrounded by birdsong and the horses, ponies and our adorable donkey.

‘Wellbeing’ days are 11am until 4pm ( Meet from 10.30am) and small groups of 4 people, this ensures everyone gets hands on experience if they wish to work with the ponies and provides a warm and friendly atmosphere.

An experiential opportunity to enhance and improve your General Wellbeing and focusing on life skills: Confidence – Motivation – Self Esteem – Assertiveness – Boundaries – Managing Stress – Mindfulness

Spending time with horses gives us unique insight into our habits and behaviours, providing the opportunity for positive change. These unique moments can be empowering. The sensitive nature of horses and their spiritual essence contributes to the magical healing of Nurture in Nature. We will do some mindfulness, meditation and some creative work which includes themes from the different spiritual cultures around the world. Creative work with symbols can be a powerful way to make connections with changes we wish for and this may include painting on paper or ponies. Working with the ponies may include; mindful walking with the loose ponies; meditation and reflective time in their company; brushing; leading around the safe arena; and tasks such as building and leading them around an obstacle course.


2018 price – £45 per person for the day, including lunch, drinks and snacks. The comfort of the woodburner in the Shepherd’s Hut welcomes you in to the sacred space where your journey begins.

With Christmas approaching, these times can be very hectic. So be careful to have a good balance of work and rest. Extra shopping for those special presents and organising visiting family and friends is not always easy when there is travelling around to be sorted out. Money can feel stretched and that can be a stress in itself.

So try and be organised, make lists, use post-its, try different coloured pens for themes and maybe simply making homemade presents will help the finances. People very often really enjoy a lovely homemade gift. Financial help is usually available through your local Citizens Advice Bureau.

This can also be a difficult time for feelings of grief, missing a person who cannot be around to share these festive days, can feel difficult to manage, especially with all the up-beat advertising in shops and media. Maybe take some flowers to a grave or remembrance place as an acknowledgment of your love to be giving to them. It is still lovely enough if you put flowers in your home or have special decorations that remind you of them and you can feel connected to that person. Special treasure boxes of keepsakes and lovely memories of that person can help soothe the feeling of grief, and shedding tears allows those painful feelings be released, and healing is occurring at the same time.

Find someone that you can trust and is caring, to talk to if that is what may help.

Spend some time doing things you really enjoy and find some time for mindfulness and meditation to help your mind, body and spirit to have a rest and recharge your batteries.



Spending time looking after the horses and ponies can highlight the necessity of basic requirements to survive. Physiological needs of food and water are the first basic requirement. We can use the model below to reflect on our needs and horses needs in the therapy sessions and get a good sense of where the levels of self-care and self-compassion are.

“Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a motivational theory in psychology comprising a five tier model of human needs, often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid. Maslow (1943, 1954) stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs and that some needs take precedence over others. Our most basic need is for physical survival, and this will be the first thing that motivates our behavior. Once that level is fulfilled the next level up is what motivates us, and so on. ” Saul McLeod

Winter Wellbeing

With winter coming on fast now, don’t forget some basic tips for general wellbeing.

  1. Eat healthily, there is lots of lovely nutritious food out there and don’t forget your fluids
  2. Meet up with friends and have fun! Do things that you really enjoy
  3. Bring some colour and beautiful things into your everyday life to cheer up your surroundings
  4. Rest and good quality sleep is important too
  5. Manage a busy schedule carefully. Planning, making notes and using post-its or a visual board in the kitchen can help put things into perspective
  6. Be around people that treat you with respect
  7. Know who to turn to for support if you feel down or stuck with a difficulty
  8. Heap on the Self-Compassion, be kind to yourself
