Equine Assisted Therapy & Wellbeing

Equine Assisted Therapy (EFP) uses equine-facilitated activities to explore the way a client sees and relates to themselves and others, their patterns of behaviour and survival as well as their gifts and strengths, and may include the exploration of past experiences and traumas. Equine Assisted Therapy is a form of psychotherapy and relies upon the therapeutic knowledge and experience gained through a mental health qualification.

Equine Assisted Wellbeing (EFL) uses equine-facilitated activities as a tool for self development and education, with a focus on the present moment. Skills developed include non-verbal communication, assertiveness, creative thinking, problem-solving, leadership, teamwork, relationship skills, confidence and resilience.

Horses and humans are connected in deep and profound ways. History shows us a long and multi-faceted story of horses and humans working and living side-by-side. More recently, neuroscience has shown us remarkable similarities between the limbic (emotional) brain of horses and humans, which make it possible for horses to serve as both our mirrors and our teachers in terms of understanding ourselves, our emotional life, and the way we relate to ourselves and those around us. And then there is that inexplicable feeling of being around a horse; as Churchill once said, ‘There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man‘, (and of course a woman, and a child).

Equine Assisted Therapy and Wellbeing gives us opportunities to interact and form relationships with horses, and to learn from these experiences in a way that involves us physically, emotionally and mentally. Lessons learnt in this holistic way can be more easily absorbed and remembered, resulting in lasting and positive changes that can be transferred to the world of human-human relating.

And these intelligent, sensitive creatures are also our friends; they live entirely in the present, offering us patience, forgiveness, and another chance when we get it wrong. Do we always know how we are feeling? Are we always aware of how we are behaving or affecting others? Horses are radars for incongruence, and will reward us when we behave in a way that is in keeping with who we really are and what we truly feel.

Authentic You

“Authentic You”

Sometimes, people are in fear of being judged, even if they don’t realise it, and this can hold them back in life. Horses offer a non-judgmental relationship and they also reflect back insights to our own behaviours, which we can take great learning from, what a gift! What a unique thought; to go to a place where judgment does not exist, and we can just be ourselves! They don’t care about our clothes, our weight, our spiritual or political beliefs, or where we’ve come from. They can help you to discover, and experience, the best version of YOU that you can be. Sizzling, Scorching, Hot & Bothered?

Feeling – ‘Hot and bothered?’

Come and have a Wellbeing session with The Healing Herd. It’s good to talk and we are here to listen. Set in beautiful Somerset, surrounded by nature and all the healing that brings, when we surrender to the moment, take in the view and open our senses to Just Being.

I hope you are all keeping well hydrated and cool during this particularly hot summer. The animals are doing really quite well. We have shelters in every field and they are putting their heads into the shadows to keep the flies off. The ground is rock hard and showing many cracks now, but things are not as bad as they appear.

We are enjoying the beautiful sunsets and changing our habits to adapt to the heat. Early morning and later in the afternoons are much easier to do all the work and jobs that are required up the field. The back of the field has a lovely high hedge which is perfect for meditation sessions and mindfulness breaks, with the birds all around us, it makes for a pretty special setting for Wellbeing.

Remember – “There are ways around everything” so maybe give that some thought when up against a problem or stumbling block.

Do get in touch if you would like a session to talk about how things are sizzling or scorching in your life.

Best wishes

Claire & The Healing Herd

Mindfulness & Drumming in Nature with The Healing Herd

Come and have a session of experiential mindfulness with the Healing Herd. This photo was taken when I attended a drumming workshop with horses on the Somerset Levels in 2016. We will experience mindful breath, walking and drumming whilst supported in the midst of nature and all it’s nurture and healing sources. This experience will enhance your wellbeing and will introduce you to skills to take away with you.

Mindful drumming 01

“Mindfulness teaches us the power of returning to the moment. It re-grounds us in the present, connecting us with an awareness that acknowledges where we are and why we are there. Re-establishing that connection returns us to our lives as they actually are – not what they have been, nor what they might be.

Drumming is one of the oldest healing modalities and it remains recognised today by most holistic and alternative practitioners as a non-invasive aid to releasing physical and emotional blockages that affect the energetic body”. Graeme Green http://www.themindfulhorse.org

Sessions can include a therapeutic opportunity to talk about a current situation that is difficult or stuck and where some support and direction is required.

1 hr £55

1.5hr £75

Embracing ‘Connection’

There is something special about being around horses that is well written about in many ways and forms. They are all different, but similar in that they are sensitive souls and there is a depth of wisdom and learning to be taken from their teachings. This will be unique to each person and the truest interpretation will come from the person who is spending the time, experiencing a connection, with that particular horse,  in that authentic moment.

When we spend quality chosen time with horses, supported by all that nature provides, we can experience a more harmonious connection with ourselves and all that surrounds us. Quiet, mindful, resting and just ‘Being’ is like a tonic to our souls. Meditation and visualisations can guide us to a place of contemplation and rest, this may be where the magic of healing vibrational shift is stirring and rippling, waiting to be embraced with open arms and heart.

Spending time just ‘Being’ in the moment gives us a chance to relax in our mind and body, connecting with all our senses, which can improve our general wellbeing and give us new ways to manage life’s challenges. A relaxed body encourages a relaxed mind.

The time we spend outdoors being in the moment of ‘here and now’, noticing the weather, the sounds, the smells, the felt sensations, are all authentic moments of realness that we can recognise and replicate, bringing new habits into our lives, nurturing our mind/body/spirit.

Our body talks to us, let us turn up the volume and take notice of it’s important messages. The gut feelings, the intuitive felt messages, the synchronicities that jumble around us catching our vision. Symbols that attract our interests and songs playing in our head, fleeting words and colours and pictures that float hazly amongst our conscious thinking.

Let us spend time learning from these great wise teachers and all that the universe offers.
